This is a good read on BYU. I think they are stuck because
none of the P5 conferences wants to deal with their “no playing on Sundays” and other policies, and I suspect Utah doesn’t want them as a conference mate.
Also interesting is the trend of LDS recruits going to other schools rather than BYU. The other schools apparently will accept the two year missions sabbatical if requested, so that pulls recruits away too.
I can see why Mendenhall left and went to U Va. The school being independent in football had a lot of drawbacks both to schedule and recruiting. I would be surprised if he did not go back west in a few years if a Power 5 job opens up, or maybe even if a good G5 job opens. I don’t think he realized the magnitude of the job at Virginia.
